When abortion is banned in a state like Texas, what do people do — and what would they prefer to do?
A new peer-reviewed study explores the strategies pregnant Texans would consider when in-state abortion care was unavailable.
The research, conducted in the final weeks before Roe v. Wade was overturned, asked 293 participants about five possible strategies, including:
- Traveling to another state
- Telehealth with U.S. providers
- Obtaining pills from Mexico
- Receiving care on a ship near the Texas coast
Participants shared a range of preferences and limitations. For some, factors like access to transportation, financial resources, or childcare shaped what options felt realistic.
This research underscores the complexity of post-Roe abortion access and reinforces the need for a diverse range of safe, legal, and supported care strategies.
