Data Analyst

Position summary:

The Data Analyst will support quantitative research projects related to sexual and reproductive health by developing systems for data collection and management, analyzing primary and secondary data, and contributing to the interpretation of results. They will also collaborate on the dissemination of results through data visualization and preparing manuscripts, briefs and reports. This position reports to the Data Scientist, or Research Scientist, as assigned.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  1. Contributes to the development of and carries out data analysis plans for research projects using diverse survey, administrative, and population data and statistical software, such as Stata and/or R
  2. Harmonizes and prepares survey, administrative, and population data for statistical analysis, including transforming variables
  3. Provides statistical analysis support for the development of manuscripts, reports, grants, and presentations
  4. Assists with managing and fulfilling rapid research requests and technical assistance needs of community partners and collaborators
  5. Develops, maintains and/or implements procedures for data entry, data cleaning, and documentation, including coding and documenting missing data and fixing miscoded data
  6. Monitors data quality and identifies potential data problems by performing systematic analytic queries of missing and inconsistent information and recommends solutions to the research team
  7. Creates and maintains data dictionaries/codebooks and meta data for primary data collection projects and administrative/population data, as needed
  8. Creates or provides data sets and subsets for specific analyses, including merging and harmonizing datasets

Other duties and responsibilities:

  1. Works closely with Data and Research Scientists, affiliated researchers, and other members of the research team to define data analysis and reporting needs
  2. Validates dataset creation and data analyses
  3. Writes and prepares manuscripts, briefs and other materials for internal and external audiences in collaboration with other members of the research team
  4. Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with Data and Research Scientists, affiliated researchers, and other research staff
  5. Contributes to an inclusive and supportive team-oriented environment that values collaboration, learning and diverse perspectives
  6. Other duties as assigned

Education and experience:

  • At least two (2) years of full-time, professional work experience with data management and statistical analysis, including exploratory data analysis and basic regression analysis
  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Statistics, Sociology, Economics, or related field; Bachelor’s degree and equivalent knowledge gained from relevant experience
  • Experience with GIS programming and analysis in ArcGIS, QGIS or R, preferred
    Knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Committed to the Project’s mission to provide evidence to inform policies that promote more equitable, comprehensive reproductive healthcare
  • Proficiency programming in Stata, R, or similar statistical software package
  • Familiarity performing exploratory and quantitative data analysis using statistical models such as linear and logistic regression
  • Familiarity with programming Qualtrics, Question Pro and/or REDCap for data entry
  • Ability and willingness to learn new programming or quantitative analysis skills as needed
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to effectively verbally communicate statistical results to research team members
  • Able to work collaboratively to support senior researchers with data analysis, data visualization, and interpretation and communication of research findings
  • Able to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize while maintaining a sense of humor
  • Strong English-language writing skills to contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, briefs, and reports
  • Has a high level of computer literacy, including confidence using (or learning to use) Microsoft suite (Sharepoint, Teams) and other digital tools

Organizational relationships: The Data Analyst reports to the Data Scientist or Research Scientist, as assigned.

Physical demands: Sitting at a computer for extended periods of time. Some travel may be required.

Work environment: This is a full-time, exempt position; evening and weekend hours may be needed to meet deadlines. Residence in Texas is preferred; remote working arrangements within the US may accommodated.
If not based in Austin, the person in this role will be expected to participate in regular in-person activities and meetings. We follow CDC COVID-19 recommendations for vaccination and guidelines for in-person work during pandemic surges.

The salary range for this position is $60,000-75,000 annually. Organizational overview: Resound Research for Reproductive Health (formerly the Texas Policy Evaluation Project, TxPEP) is a multidisciplinary collaborative that evaluates the impact of policy and funding changes affecting abortion and contraception in Texas and surrounding states. Our mission is to generate knowledge that informs evidence-based abortion, contraceptive and pregnancy-related care and policies that promote more equitable reproductive healthcare. Our work is both responsive to the dynamic reproductive healthcare landscape and aims to advance long-term solutions to improve access to comprehensive care.
